The 12 Steps of NA

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is a nonprofit fellowship for people seeking recovery from drug addiction. NA outlines a 12-step program to help members achieve and maintain abstinence from mind- and mood-altering substances. The 12 steps are:

  1. Admit powerlessness over addiction and inability to manage one’s own life.
  2. Come to believe in a Power greater than oneself that can restore sanity.
  3. Make decision to turn will and life over to care of God as understood.
  4. Make searching and fearless moral inventory of self.
  5. Admit to God, self and another human being the exact nature of wrongs.
  6. Become entirely ready to have God remove all character defects.
  7. Humbly ask God to remove shortcomings.
  8. Make list of all those harmed and become willing to make amends.
  9. Make direct amends to such people whenever possible, except when doing so would injure them or others.
  10. Continue to take personal inventory and promptly admit when wrong.
  11. Seek through prayer and meditation to improve conscious contact with God as understood, praying only for knowledge of God’s will and the power to carry that out.
  12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, try to carry this message to other addicts and practice these principles in all affairs.
