The 12 Steps of NA

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is a 12-step program that provides support for people recovering from drug addiction. The 12 steps aim to help members achieve and maintain abstinence from mind-altering and mood-altering substances.

The 12 steps of NA are:

  • Admit powerlessness over addiction and that life has become unmanageable.
  • Come to believe in a Power greater than oneself that can restore sanity.
  • Make a decision to turn one’s will and life over to the care of this Higher Power.
  • Make a searching and fearless moral inventory of oneself.
  • Admit to this Higher Power, to oneself, and to another human being the exact nature of one’s wrongs.
  • Become entirely ready to have these defects of character removed.
  • Humbly ask this Higher Power to remove shortcomings.
  • Make a list of all those harmed and become willing to make amends to them all.
  • Make direct amends to such people whenever possible, except when doing so would injure them or others.
  • Continue to take personal inventory and promptly admit when wrong.
  • Seek through prayer and meditation to improve conscious contact with this Higher Power as we understand it, praying only for knowledge of its will and the power to carry that out.
  • Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, try to carry this message to other addicts and practice these principles in all affairs.
