The 12 Steps of NA

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is a recovery program that uses a 12-step model to help those struggling with addiction. The 12 steps aim to motivate members to make positive life changes by:

  1. Admitting powerlessness over addiction and that their lives have become unmanageable.
  2. Coming to believe that a Higher Power can restore them to sanity.
  3. Making a decision to turn their will and lives over to the care of a Higher Power.
  4. Making a searching and fearless moral inventory of themselves.
  5. Admitting to themselves, another human being, and their Higher Power the exact nature of their wrongs.
  6. Becoming entirely ready to have these defects of character removed by their Higher Power.
  7. Humbly asking their Higher Power to remove their shortcomings.
  8. Making a list of all the people they have harmed and becoming willing to make amends with them.
  9. Making direct amends to such people whenever possible, except when doing so would injure them or others.
  10. Continuing to take personal inventory and promptly admit when they are wrong.
  11. Seek through prayer and meditation to improve their conscious contact with their Higher Power as they understand it, praying only for knowledge of their Higher Power’s will for them and the power to carry that out.
  12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, trying to carry this message to other addicts and practice these principles in all their affairs.
