Planning for 2000-2001: Mental Health and Work

The World Mental Health Day theme for 2000 and 2001 is Mental Health and Work. For the first time the campaign will extend over two years to allow a broader examination of matters which affect employees at every level, with multiple costs for society at large, and requiring an appropriate response from employers.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) based in Geneva, Switzerland, has expressed interest and the Federation is exploring partnerships for planning, including one with the Canadian Business and Economic Roundtable on Mental Health. The Round-table has organized a large multi-faceted information program in Canada to present mental health and mental illness as economic and business issues.

On 8-10 October 2000, coinciding with World Mental Health Day on 10 October, both the ILO and WFMH will participate in an international meeting in Geneva on Productivity, Well-being and Risk Management. The conference will provide a forum to examine workplace issues and best practices, covering such topics as programs to prevent mental illness and promote mental health; the development of effective work/life strategies; and the human aspects of organizational change.

The World Mental Health Day Planning Kit for the year 2000 will be available by mid-year on the Federation’s website,

www.wfmh.org, but if you are also interested in obtaining a printed copy of the kit please send your address to:
